LANCASTER AND VALOIS Christopher Page, dir; Gothic Voices HELIOS 55294 (59:07 Text and Translation)

Music of MACHAUT, SOLAGE, PYCARD, STURGEON, FONTEYNS, CESARIS, CORDIER, ANON

This first appeared as Hyperion 66588 (16:3), and it focuses on the last half of the Hundred Years’ War. The House of Valois reigned in France while their cousins, the Valois dukes, ruled Burgundy but sided with England. There the House of Lancaster Read more (Shakespeare’s three Henrys) reigned after 1399, and Henry VI was even crowned king of France at Notre Dame in 1422. Yet while the war was fought entirely on French soil and John II died in London where he was being held for ransom, it ended in 1453 not just with England’s loss of Aquitaine but also with its expulsion from all of northern France except Calais. It reversed the old saying that England loses every battle but the last. During the long occupation of northern France, French composers were exposed to the contenance angloise . The chief relic of English music of the period is the Old Hall manuscript, the source of the four English pieces heard here, all Mass movements or anthems. Some of the French music originated at the court of Burgundy, where Baude Cordier may have served.

There is much more detail in the original review, which marked the halfway point in the series of discs that Page made with this group. It is enough to add that the booklet reproduces the original note, including its illustrative staff notation. Page put together a remarkable series of programs from this period, and newer collectors have the advantage of snapping them up now at midprice.
