Faina Lushtak's Russian training manifests itself over the course of roughly half of Chopin's complete Mazurkas in regard to her big, juicy sonority, assertive fingers, and heart-on-sleeve phrasing. She employs a huge dynamic range and doles out rubato in generous measures, generally focusing her attention on the music's top line. There's a shapeless, predictable quality to her rhythmic pushing and pulling in pieces like Op. 6 No. 2, Op. 17 Nos. 3 and 4, Op. 24 No. 4, and Op. 63 No. 3. greater consistency and proportion from Garrick Ohlsson (Arabesque) and Arthur Rubinstein (his stereo RCA version). Indeed, Centaur's own catalog boasts a very distinctive cycle featuring Antonio Barbosa-Lima. However, at her best, Lushtak truly holds your attention, and her piano is excellently reproduced.
