Notes and Editorial Reviews

A. GABRIELI Missa brevis à 4 in D. Miserere à 6. Sopra la morte d’Adriano à 5 CCh of Concentus Musicus Patavinus (Fabio Framba, dir); Schola Gregoriana Scriptoria (Nicola M. Bellinazzo, dir) TACTUS 510701 (75:04 & )

Andrea Gabrieli wrote two works by this title, one in Fa (or F) and this one in Re. Both are preserved in manuscripts in the Bavarian State Library, compiled about 1565, and both were published only recently, Read more this one in 1997. The composer had been at the Munich court in 1562, undoubtedly the year of composition. The format of a complete Mass on this disc is filled out with chants for the Purification and four organ interludes. Nothing is said in the notes about the psalm and the lament that come at the end, not even the identity of Adriano (presumably a doge of Venice). The customary Mass Propers include a sequence, “Concentu parili.”

The Mass is a fine example of the straightforward polyphony that was composed in response to the decree of the Council of Trent calling for the texts of sacred music to be intelligible. While Palestrina’s music is usually cited as a model in this regard, the present work is as fine an example as one might seek. The singing of the polyphony is lovely, while the chant is also sung with fine tonal quality but somewhat lacking in vitality. (Bellinazzo has also recorded two full chant discs for this label.) Altogether, the program is a valuable overview of music at St. Mark’s basilica in the 16th century.
