For those of you who think all of the fine Romantic symphonies have been recorded; here is a wonderful surprise - terrific music by a most talented, completely unknown composer. If you read the enthusiastic review in GRAMOPHONE you will know what I am talking about. Victor Bendix was born into a Jewish middle-class family in Copenhagen and brought up in a home in which music played a very important part. In fact his father, who was an amateur flautist and in business as a wholesaler, spent more of his time on music than he did on business and the business went bust, an event which almost put an end to his son's musical education. His father was able to introduce his son to Niels W. Gade who consented to teach the boy. On completing his education, he went to Germany. In 1872, he was present at the laying of the cornerstone at Bayreuth. He came back to Denmark where he became Gade's assistant at the Conservatorie. He soon became an esteemed and popular composer, but, as the program notes point out, in great detail I might add, his life was filled with scandal. Suffice it to say, "he was a favorite with the ladies." It is by no means impossible that these scandals affected Bendix's position in Danish music and were among the reasons why the Royal Danish Orchestra never so much as played a note of his music even though his elder brother Frits held a responsible post in the orchestra most of his life. Indeed, is Bendix a composer your customers should investigate? Is his music worthwhile? On May 17, 1931, shortly before his death Carl Nielsen wrote this to the Widow Bendix: "Just think that it is nearly 80 years ago today that Victor Bendix was born. Time and eternity are I suppose something that we humans are least able to understand, and there is something special and serious about this strange succession, both when we look into the future and the past. I owe Victor much more than he probably realized. He was a good master who ruthlessly told me the truth when I was young, always with warmth and commitment, so that in spite of the criticism one always felt encouraged. Altogether he had a positive nature and for this reason his importance as a composer, conductor and teacher in Danish music was so great and enriching." Never, ever let it be said that there is still not wonderful, new music being produced by outstanding independent labels. The music of Victor Bendix will reward the listener.
