Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (Sicily and Naples), where long Spanish domination had fostered a tradition of religious and operatic music, had an eventful history, coming under Austrian rule in 1707 but returning to Bourbon Spain in 1734. The four men represented in this recording, all of whom lived within that period, were primarily composers of vocal music (Scarlatti, Durante and Pergolesi formed a teacher/student `dynasty'), instrumental works being a small part of their output. In Pergolesi's case it is even smaller than it might seem; the Flute Concerto, smoothly played on the modern flute (with a belief that trills start from the bottom), is not by him despite its 'operatic' traits. The flute also plays a leading role in the Read more polyphonic-to-monodic transitional Concerto grosso of Scarlatti, but the winsome and concise Concerto in D is left to the strings. After hearing the richness of the first of Durante's set of eight Concerti per quartetto you may wonder why the gramophone has been less generous to them than to the Concerti grossi of Handel and Corelli; it is quite simply a gem.

Porpora was celebrated as a singing teacher; here the voice is that of Sollima's cello, impressively brought to life with alert regard to style, weight of tone and economy of vibrato—I have indulged in the luxury of listening to this track several times already. Sollima's virtues are shared by the strings of the ECCO, brightly recorded and nicely balanced, with the continuo harpsichord peeping through. I urge you to share the pleasure I have had from this record.
