Biography by Robert Adelson
The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir was founded in 1981 by Tõnu Kaljuste. It succeeded the amateur chamber choir Ellerhein (founded by Kaljuste's father, Heino Kaljuste, in 1966), which in turn had succeeded the children's choir Ellerhein founded in 1951. Tõnu Kaljuste served as the choir's principal conductor and artistic director until Paul Hillier assumed leadership of the choir in 2001. The choir performs repertoire ranging from Gregorian chant to contemporary composers and is particularly noted for its performances of the music of Arvo Pärt and other Estonian composers. The choir has also performed with numerous guest conductors, including David Willcocks, Helmuth Rilling, Claudio Abbado, Anders Öhrwall, Jon Washburn, Eric Ericson, Ward Swingle, and Ivan Fisher. In 1991, the choir won three gold medals and was awarded the Grand Prix at the Takarazuka Chamber Choir Competition in Japan. It has toured the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, and Europe.
