Biography

Born: July 17, 1915; Elmira, NY   Died: March 12, 1973; Chichester, England  
After early study on the piano and organ, Ballou attended Bennington College, Mills College, and the Juilliard School of Music. She later toured as a pianist with several dance companies and composed ballets for Louise Kloepper and José Limón. As an educator, Ballou developed experimental methods for teaching theory at the college level. The text Creative Explorations of Musical Elements (1971) is among her pedagogical manuscripts. In her own Read more words, her music "tends toward classicism in that it stresses clarity of design and directness of expression." Her Capriccio for violin and piano was the first work by an American woman composer to make its debut in the White House (1963). Read less
