Notes and Editorial Reviews

"The Centrediscs release devoted solely to Lizée is in danger, at times, of collapsing under the weight of the material’s cleverness. This Will Not Be Televised and RPM account for more than half the total length of the CD, and frankly, are too long for what they have to offer. Both feature a “turntablist” who torments and modifies a variety of crackly LPs, including, so help me God, Perry Como’s Catch a Falling Star and Duran Duran’s Rio. The deconstruction of these and other materials is not without its perverse interest, but after a while, it starts to resemble a funny story retold too many times, and one is left asking, “Yes, but what else can you do?” Girl, You’re Living a Life of Crime banishes the turntablist (who also Read more goes by the moniker “P-Love”), but here Lizée figuratively gets stuck in a similar but different rut by mimicking the skipping and repeating of a malfunctioning CD. The notation and performance of these faults requires no little talent, but if I wanted to hear a defective CD, I’d probably just make my own. But perhaps I am missing the point. Télévision, a work for two percussionists, was inspired by the composer’s memories of the “symmetry and beauty of the interior components [of television sets] that were a constant background during [her] childhood.” (Her father was an electronics retailer and collector.) Scored for two percussionists, Télévision might appeal to everyone’s latent geek, although I think it is more likely to do so live than on CD, where it makes a rather arid listening experience. The remaining two works are more user-friendly. Jupiter Moon Menace occupies similar terrain as Left Brain/Right Brain, and Carpal Tunnels plays with evolving time signatures and the sound of a progressive jazz combo...It is always good to encounter new classical music that doesn’t kowtow to commercialism and mere approachability."
