LASSUS Complete Vocal and Instrumental Duos Ens l’Échelle PARATY 111.114 (78:38 Text and Translation)

This generous collection of early Lassus needs to be examined closely. The title, misleading as it stands, is clarified as “46 instrumental and vocal works for two, three, four, and five voices” including “32 world premiere recordings from sources printed between 1565 and 1604.” The list includes the 24 duos of 1577 (referred to in the title), which have recently been recorded on Tactus Read more (Fanfare 35:2). Some of the duos and several other pieces were recently recorded by Andrew Nethsingha (35: 1), also claiming to be first recordings, so the count of first recordings must be reduced. Since this disc was recorded in late 2010, the question of priority is not significant, and each of the three could honestly claim to be first. But the Tactus disc must defer to this one, since there the vocal works as well as the rest were rendered instrumentally, and the playing time left room for much more, as we can hear on this disc. Nethsingha’s disc is a useful complement to this one, since the overlap is not great and both offer unrecorded works. The source of one three-part motet, O bone Jesu, o piissime Jesu, is given as the Nine Lessons from the Book of Job (1582), but the text is not found there, and I have no idea where it can be found. (That work is overdue for CD; I have only LP versions, although one of them has been reissued.)

The ensemble of three singers and five players is top-heavy in tonal quality, perhaps because the highest voice dominates. This is their first recording, and the group seems to be of recent origin. The name of the group, “Scale,” is the subject of a page-long discussion of the word in its widest context, a somewhat pretentious essay. Yet the group may have further insights to offer in their next efforts, so I look forward to anything they choose to give us.
