AIRS DE DIFFERENS AUTHEURS DONNÉS À UNE DAME Thomas Van Essen, cond; Les Meslanges HORTUS 062 (58:30 Text and Translation)

Music of S. LE CAMUS, C. LE CAMUS, M.-A. CHARPENTIER, BACILLY, VISÉE, HUYGENS, GAULTIER, GIRARD, HOTMAN, LULLY

The era of the Sun King is represented by music that is almost entirely unfamiliar. The only title that I easily recognized is Read more style="font-style:italic">Stances du Cid of Marc-Antoine Charpentier, three brief pieces published in 1681 that were previously recorded by both Henri Ledroit and Paul Agnew. Three other Charpentier pieces are included here, only one of which was on the same Ledroit disc. The featured composers are Sébastien and Charles Le Camus, lacking vital dates here. Sébastien’s dates on an Erato LP are 1610-77, and his principal witness on discs is an FNAC issue made in 1994 devoted entirely to his airs sérieux . He served Louis XIII and, after 1661, Louis XIV. Less is known about his son Charles, who succeeded his father as musician to the king for 13 years. Sébastien’s airs were published by his son a year after his death, so other airs published years later are presumably the work of Charles, though only the surname is used. (A question mark is used for all of his attributions here.) No less a figure than Madame de Sévigné wrote that “Le Camus has befriended me and says I sing his airs nicely.” One of these pieces is heard on a disc of this period ( Fanfare 25:2). Robert de Visée is represented by two songs, the remaining composers by only one (Gaultier is either Ennemond or Denys, not specified).

Les Meslanges is made up of the baritone Thomas Van Essen accompanied by Emmanuele Guigues on viol and Manuel de Grange on lute and theorbo. Van Essen has recorded with other ensembles, but this appears to be the first appearance of these three together. They clearly enjoy this music and the opportunity to perform together. As a sample of the more obscure music for the Sun King’s reign, this will be of interest to specialists.
