Notes and Editorial Reviews

"The very opening of Hary Janos establishes the extra richness and resonance of this Dutoit version... That is not just a question of recording quality in the famed acoustic of St Eustache, but of the quality of the playing of this magnificent orchestra. Dutoit characteristically conveys a sense of purpose in each piece...The Peacock Variations benefit even more than Hary Janos from the opulence of the Montreal sound, most of all in the glorious climax of the finale, which with Dutoit has tremendous panache... For this apt and generous coupling of Kodaly’s four most popular orchestral pieces Dutoit stands as a clear first choice..." -- The Gramophone "The very opening of Hary Janos establishes the extra richness and resonance of this Dutoit version...  Light Hungarian November 2, 2014 By owen  r. (lakewood, CA) See All My Reviews "My Hungarian friend, Mr. Stankov, a musical Bon Viveur, says that ''this music does nothing for me.'' Eventhough he did not elaborate I think I know why: this is primarily a collection of musical vignettes, averaging 4+ minutes each, that were written for a musical play. As such they lack a cohesiveness, or organic unity that you would have in a concerto or symphony. They therefore do not require the listener's analytic attention. This is light melodic music ideal for background when you are otherwise occupied. John Dunkerly, the recording engineer, is your guarantee that this is a typically very good Decca (London) recording." Report Abuse
Excellence Preserved February 25, 2014 By bess holloway (Boulder, CO) See All My Reviews "I own an original recording of this highly acclaimed production and was gratified to see that it is safely preserved. It's a real treasure!" Report Abuse
Vastly under rated composer April 22, 2012 By r. corrado (virginia beach, VA) See All My Reviews "Orchestra excellent! DuToit has a real command of this repertoire. This repertoire usually takes an eastern European orchestra to do it justice. However DuToit and the Montral Sym.really does enormous jutice to this music.I bought this recording mainly for the Peacock Variations, since I was fairly familiar with Harry Janos and The Dances of Galanta.I am thoroughly satisfied with this recording. More Kodaly on the way. R. Corrado" Report Abuse
