Notes and Editorial Reviews

Augusta Reed Thomas's Eclipse Musings, in which the soloists are joined by a chamber ensemble, is a real find. In just over 10 minutes the composer sends the soloists on a journey through a multicolored landscape created with great economy by her tiny ensemble.

The programming of this disc of mostly lightweight, pleasant music saves the high point for last. Augusta Reed Thomas's Eclipse Musings, in which the soloists are joined by a chamber ensemble, is a real find. In just over 10 minutes the composer sends the soloists on a journey through a multicolored landscape created with great economy by her tiny ensemble. Since, of course, the major things the two instruments are capable of doing is providing splashes of color

The duo works are also quite successful. Katherine Hoover's Canyon Echoes can seem a mite diffuse in its slower sections, but the whole is engaging. Of greater import is Roberto Sierra's Crònica del descubrimento (Chronicles of Discovery) from which the disc as a whole takes its title. The six-part suite displays the composer's characteristic transformation of the sounds of his native Puerto Rico into music for classically trained artists. The parallels to Villa-Lobos are obvious and deserved. The Joan Tower work is surprisingly sedate from this master of orchestral color. It is as if the restrictions of two quiet instruments have somehow inhibited her always fertile imagination.

The performances seem very fine, and the recorded sound is perfect. Lightweight certainly, but if this instrumental combination interests you no hesitation is needed.
