Notes and Editorial Reviews

The unknown name here is Ludolf Nielsen. At the beginning of the 20th century he was one of Denmark's leading composers with more than 200 works to his credit. He won his greatest renown as a composer for his romantic songs. He always seemed to choose just the right musical feeling for his songs and piano pieces. He grew up in the country and as a boy, he was a fiddler. At the age of nineteen, he went to Copenhagen, where he was awarded a scholarship for the Royal Academy of Music. He was considered a very gifted musician by his teachers. As he spent more and more time composing rather than playing in the orchestra, his circle of friends came to contain more painters and poets, rather than musicians. His burning wish was to be an opera Read more composer. His first opera Isbella was produced at the Royal Danish Theater in 1915, to a good reception. This CD contains three songs from the opera. Although he had been trained a violinist and viola player, he willingly sat down at the piano to play his own compositions. There are full English texts to all the songs included in this CD.
