Notes and Editorial Reviews
Composers are drawn to write for the saxophone by parallel attractions of interest and fascination: the tonal range and flexibility defy convenient classification and allow creativity in a broad range of musical styles. This CD gives us a sampling of Australian composers' response to the allure of the saxophone family. It spans the gamut from sonatas to jazz-inspired statements to the improvisatory elements that are central to post-modern musical expression. Margery Smith studied clarinet and saxophone at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, followed by further studies in Europe and the USA. Her orchestral positions have included Associate Principal Clarinet with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
