Notes and Editorial Reviews

During the 19th and 20th centuries in particular, the music of Western and Eastern Christendom blossomed with great variety. While the development of the Western Church's music is characterized by Gregorian chants, Dutch polyphony, Baroque splendor, Vienna classics and Romanesque masters right through to Bruckner, the originally monodic music of the Eastern Church took on harmonic elements from the West rearranged for several voices, but nevertheless generally avoided chromatic harmonization. Instruments also remained taboo. Only more recently did composers such as Arvo Part, who converted from Protestantism to Orthodoxy, try to make the link to contemporary music. However, even he did not overstep certain tonal harmonic limits. The Read more compilation of a-cappella choir music presented on this CD demonstrates not only its diversity of origin and descent, but also that resulting through the mutual cross-pollination of Eastern and Western influences.
