AMAZING GRACE - AN AMERICAN TAPESTRY is an eclectic mix of American music composed or arranged for flute as performed by Donna Wissinger. The selections range from well-known works by composers such as Stephen Foster and Leonard Bernstein to less familiar fare from Stella Sung, Paul Knopf, and others. The disc opens with 'Simple Gifts,' Aaron Copland's lovely arrangement of the Shaker song and continues with his Duo for Flute and Piano, a work that for the most part is typical Copland but displays touches of dissonance and atonality in the "Poetic" movement. Peter Schickele is better known for his P.D.Q. Bach persona but is represented here by his gentle, aptly titled 'Two Pleasant Songs.' Sung's Three Dances for Flute and Piano,Read more composed expressly for Wissinger, and works by Samuel Barber, Ned Rorem, Ernest Bloch, and William Grant Still afford ample opportunities for Wissinger to display her considerable skills. The disc concludes with Howard Tappan's arrangements of 'Amazing Grace' and 'A Simple Gift,' the latter offering an interesting contrast to the opening work. AMAZING GRACE is a fine sampling of musical Americana and a virtuosic showcase for Wissinger, ably supported throughout by Jon Klibonoff on piano. Read less
