Notes and Editorial Reviews

Shalom is a collection of works that gives the listener a glimpse into the evolution of Jewish music, secular and sacred, over a period of 500 years. Salamone Rossi?s Eftakh Na Sefatay was composed in the sixteenth century for the ceremony of the opening of the ark and taking out the Torah scroll for the public reading. He is the only composer of polyphonic music for the synagogue to appear in print before the nineteenth century. Samuel Adler?s Five Sephardic Choruses was composed in 1991 and draws tunes from Tunes from the Sephardic traditions of pre-expulsion Spain as well as the Eastern Mediterranean and central Asian and Arab lands. Eric Whitacre?s Five Hebrew Love Songs reflects today?s culture. These beautiful and profoundly personal Read more love poems were originally set for soprano, violin and piano. They were arranged for mixed chorus and string quartet by the composer.

The Santa Fe Desert Chorale is one of the premier professional chamber choirs in the United States. Revered for their wide ranging programming that spans nine centuries of music, the Chorale has performed more than 2,000 compositions by some 500 composers. Don Scott Carpenter is General Director of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, a post he has held since 2007.
