Notes and Editorial Reviews

This program offers four concertos by composers contemporary with Haydn, and with sounds ranging from C. P. E. Bach to the very late Classical and very early Romantic. Paisiello's concerto was originally written for keyboard (probably piano), but the use of the harp is felicitous indeed. The remaining appear to be performed as written. John Garth (c. 1722-c. 1810) is a name new to me. According to the New Grove, he wrote mainly accompanied keyboard sonatas, but the jacket notes with this disc say he primarily wrote church music. I won't argue. At any rate, he wrote six concertos for cello (Op. 1, published in 1760), the one offered here being pleasant, if not an earth-shaker. The European Community Chamber Orchestra is made up of young Read more people from various countries in the EEC (European Economic Community; the "Common Market" to people in my generation), and the present disc indicates that international harmony need not be relegated to the bourse. I found this disc quite charming, music and performances, and the sound excellent. Recommended.

Lesser-known Concertos Shine July 5, 2012 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "Excellent in every respect! Consisting of 4 concertos for 4 different instruments (harp, flute, cello, and viola, respectively), this fine disk illustrates the explosion in innovative orchestral writing from all over Europe in the late 18th century. Paisiello (Italian), Gretry (French), Garth (English),and Stamitz (Bohemian) are represented here, and perhaps it is best to characterize all of these works like this- classically structured, great melodies, excellent interchange between soloist and orchestra, solid counterpoint writing leading to pleasant thematic resolution. This disk is a clear winner! Strongly recommended." Report Abuse
