If you haven’t read Simon Schama’s The Embarrassment of Riches: An Interpretation of Dutch Culture in the Golden Age , consider doing so. Its wealth of factual material based on source documents and intelligent commentary provide vivid insights into how one culture reacted upon the sudden influx of great wealth. Unfortunately, Schama’s work never mentions the important role music served for the burgeoning Dutch brede middenstand , or broad middle ground (and it’s a problem in several of his other fine books, as well). He considers tobacco, brothels, books, paintings, food, tulips, clothes, charity, Calvinism, and drinking, among other areas into which the Dutch poured the capital they made off inventing capitalism. But he overlooks the way the well-bred public emulated the English whom they were so close to, and took up the practices of manufacturing instruments and music-making with enthusiasm.

The notes to this album tell us precisely what Schama missed. They discuss the prevalence of Dutch recorder makers in the Netherlands, and the large quantity of music and instruments produced by the culture during the Baroque. Finally and most importantly, they consider latter-day collectors of musical instruments, and of the recorders that have survived and are now to be found in The Hague’s Gemeentemuseum. Of that group, some in good condition have been chosen for this recording by Saskia Coolen.

The musical selections are intelligently chosen, with an eye to variety. Though much of it is by Dutch composers, some wrote in a broadly German style (Schickhardt and Bronnenmüller, despite his training with Scarlatti), while others were Italian (Corelli, Fiocco). Several works are more popular or folk-influenced (Piccart, Eyck), and the rest are academic in background and elaboration (De Fesch, Nozeman). Further differences are achieved by the occasional duet, using instruments of varying ranges, from sopranino to tenor, and the absence of accompaniment, or accompaniment provided by arch lute or harpsichord.

The addition of a sonata by Unico van Wassenaer is of especial interest, as he was the author of the anonymously published concerto grosso credited for so many years to Pergolesi. As a member of the nobility, Wassenaer was supposed to be an accomplished amateur; to publish music was to acknowledge a professional status, and that meant effort —a plebian quality that the upper classes were supposedly above. His sonata is one of three that has recently been authenticated, and shows a more conventional writing style still based on Corelli.

My only significant criticism of this disc concerns the ordering of its selections. Matters begin with several slow to moderate pieces, including two movements drawn from the van Noordt Sonata that are uncharacteristically plodding—especially a vivace that is performed at only moderate tempo. It’s not until cut 11 that some true variety in pacing appears, and Coolen demonstrates both rhythmic verve and a splendid technique when challenged. Still, she is not a member of the speed demon club at any time, and it allows her to carefully contrast accents and ornaments to advantage. The sound quality throughout has good presence and balance, with just enough room ambience to bring out each instrument’s natural sound.

There are two series of liner notes: accurate and reasonably good if brief descriptions of the works performed on this disc, and a lengthy, excellent essay on the history of recorders, recorder collectors, and the problems associated with playing these historical instruments. The back of the notes also includes a summary catalog of all the 17th- and 18th-century recorders in The Hague’s Geumeentemuseum’s collections, with details of origin, materials used (for example, maple with tortoiseshell covering), and playing condition. The final booklet page associates each work with a specific instrument.

In short, whether you’re a Baroque enthusiast, a recorder fancier, or just someone who enjoys the lighter side of well-made classical music, this album’s a winner.
