Notes and Editorial Reviews

LOOK BOTH WAYS presents the music of Luciano Berio as a performance vehicle for reed and wind player David Sherr, as well as a departure point for some of Sherr's own compositions. A series of solo works Berio entitled 'Sequenza,' dating from the late 1950s to the early 1990s and written for specific virtuosic performers, seeks to expand or exploit the expressive vocabulary of their instruments. Sherr takes on the formidable task of tackling Sequenzas I, VII and IXa for flute, oboe and clarinet, respectively, and he does an admirable job of pushing the envelope in each one. He also then ornaments Sequenza VII, adding viola, harp, vibes, flute and bass, calling the new conglomeration 'Palimpsest.' 'Debussy Deb-you-do' (droll titles are a Read more mainstay of Sherr's ouevre) also incorporates material from two of the Sequenzas, while 'Sax Lines and Audio Tape' employs a note row from a Charlie Parker solo and works it in echt-bebop style.
