New York-born composer Stephen Shewan, who studied with one of the deans of American music, Samuel Adler, is a prodigious talent and has composed music in every genre. This recording features Shewan's works that are inspired by religious subjects.
The Elegy for Strings, an adaptation of a movement from his first string quartet, is a poignant homage to composer Samuel Barber. Shewan's work is eloquent and passionate in utterance. The oratorio 'The Prodigal Son' is a large-scale work for soloists, chorus and orchestra. Shewan displays the many facets of his style in this deeply moving work.
