New Candy for the Double-Reed Music Lover and OthJune 3, 2012By S. Bruce (Eau Claire, WI)See All My Reviews"All music on this CD was composed in the last 23 years by bassoon players. I first heard Lament", the last movement of John Steinmetzs Sonata, this past year at a faculty concert on campus and marveled at its poignancy. I wanted to hear it again and this CD has the only recorded version I could find. What a wonderful surprise it has been for me! I now know more of the varied sounds of the bassoon and the possibilities of expression by the bassoonist . Each composition has something new to offer the listener, and new ways to think about the bassoon and piano combination. To my mind Michael Burns, bassoon and Inara Zandmane, piano are attuned in their playing in such a way that the result is greater than one can imagine from only two people. Burns, from New Zealand, and Zandmane, from Latvia, do extremely well together. Michael Burns notes are informative and interesting to read. He traveled and met with each composer in 2008 which adds validity to his words."Report Abuse
