When Empress Maria Theresa arranged the marriage of her son Ferdinand to Maria Beatrice d‘Este, it was a matter of course that the wedding festivities in Milan in October 1771 were to include two large-scale opera performances. The commission went to two musicians who could not have been more different: the 72 years old, highly respected opera composer Johann Adolph Hasse, and the fifteen year old wunderkind Mozart, who was responsible for composing a so-called “festa teatrale“. Mozart was also instructed to write the ballet music or “Ballo.”
