Notes and Editorial Reviews

On May 20, 1953 a young singer who had attracted attention in a handful of concerts made his stage debut in Vienna's Volksoper in a performance of I Pagliacci. On that day the audience heard and saw in the role of Silvio a gangling, awkward youth of considerable girth. The impression created by his voice, however, formed a sharp contrast to his rather unfavorable appearance - a high baritone with great carrying power and a velvety, engaging timbre. The ease with which he took the (unwritten but often inserted) high A led many members of the audience to assume that they were listening to a prospective tenor. That label - prospective tenor - stuck throughout the early years of Eberhard Waechter's career. However, as his career went on, his Read more voice consolidated. The tenor timbre gave way to a real, fully valid baritone. Not only the voice changed: the singer's whole person underwent a conspicuous transformation. Now, an unusually versatile artist, Waechter was quite at home in recitals as an art song and ballad singer and on the concert stage. His excursions into operetta and musicals also contributed greatly to his popularity. In 1987 Waechter, who had never made a secret of his wish to head an opera house one day, was named director of the Vienna Volksoper. Four years later he reached his life's ultimate goal: on September 1, 1991 he took over the management of the Vienna State Opera. But only a few months after he had begun his term as director, he died unexpectedly on March 29, 1992 in Vienna. Read less
