Notes and Editorial Reviews

Tafelmusik tickle the taste buds with some delicious baroquerie

Here's another miscellany to confound the searcher in the record shop. It begins and ends with Vivaldi, prince of concerto composers. RV536 opens with a jaunty phrase on the oboes, immediately answered by the strings, which dominates the movement to an almost obsessive degree without becoming tedious. The Largo ends with a beautifully hushed phrase on the strings; while the finale has the oboes playing as a single unit, as they do throughout, over a pedalpoint. RV 550 is a concerto da chiesa, the third movement being a brief link between the two Allegros. The four violin soloists combine sonority with leanness most appealingly.

Bach, who
Read more followed Vivaldi's more usual three-movement format in his solo concertos, is represented by an adaptation of three arias from cantatas that include the oboe d'amore in the instrumentation. The best known is probably the gently rocking 'Vergnügte Rub, beliebte Seelenlust', which John Abberger plays with touching serenity. The outer movements also work well: this 'new' work deserves a wide circulation.

Another rocking movement, this time with a cadenza, is the Amoroso of the concerto by Leo. The ducal dedicatee must have been a mean cellist: the solo writing in the Con spirito skips around all over the place, with much double-stopping. Christina Mahler is particularly expressive in the tenor register.

The Locatelli is another concerto da chiesa, with a syncopated Allegro preceded by nice suspensions in the opening Largo; the last movement heralds some fleet dialogue from the concertino. In the concerto by Fasch, Dominic Teresi's agile bassoon shares solo work with the oboes. Apart from the continuo instruments being backwardly placed, the balance is natural. Another feather in the cap for Tafelmusik and Jeanne Lamon.
