This new recording of Niccolò Jommelli's Pentecost motet "Veni Creator Spiritus" is another in a fine series of discs surveying music of the Neapolitan baroque. Jommelli's music was enormously popular in his day and was widely circulated, some manuscripts even finding their way to Latin America. His "Veni Creator Spiritus" is a tripartite aria for soprano and strings with chorus. Soprano Roberta Invernizzi's voice soars in the work's fluid melodic lines.
Invernizzi's performance of the motet "Vola turtur de nido" by Nicola Sabatino is the high point of the recording. Sabatino's 1729 motet consists of four sections of arias and recitatives, resembling a large-scale cantata. Invernizzi tosses off spiraling waves of coloratura with ease,
