Notes and Editorial Reviews

Sounding much like an overdubbed Anonymous 4--with a slightly brighter sound and placed in a highly resonant acoustic space--the seven women of the a cappella women's ensemble Discantus, plus the children's choir Coro Easo, offer a lively program of Christmas chants. The singing is characterized by well-formed, sharply-focused tone, strong, confident, well-enunciated expression, and a keen collective sense of rhythm. The 25 selections vary in their organization, variously combining the two large groups or alternating with different numbers of voices or featuring one or the other ensemble. Bells are sometimes added at the beginning or ending of the chants. Listeners familiar with chant repertoire are likely to recognize several of the songs, Read more including Hodie Christus natus est (the same one Britten used in his A Ceremony of Carols), Verbum caro factum est, Resonet in laudibus, and Orientis partibus. However, the performances of these and most of the other chants are quite varied and colorful due to the artful use of harmony and the different vocal timbres of adult and children's voices. The full power of the two choirs comes to the fore in several conductus settings, especially notable in the chant Orientis partibus, and the effect is impressive, giving listeners an enthusiastic, decidedly inspiring jolt. The final piece, Benedicamus domino--Alleluia, brings everyone together (including bells) in a rousing celebration of harmony, rhythm, and praise.

As the excellent liner notes point out, children's voices occasionally were a part of the liturgy in cathedrals and monasteries, and were especially featured at certain major festivals--the Feast of Holy Innocents, the Feast of the Circumcision, and (perhaps most fun of all) the Feast of Fools, where even a donkey attended the ceremony. The chants presented on this recording were specifically chosen to highlight texts that "exalt childhood". And it truly is an exaltation that will appeal to any chant-inclined listeners and those looking for a Christmas recording with a little different attitude. My only complaint is the overly resonant sound, which, instead of enhancing the music and atmosphere, tends to fight against the natural clarity and purity of these fine treble voices.
