OUT OF THE BLUE: COLLECTIVE COMPOSITIONS Trio Zero TYXART 12003 (74:41)

Is this disc jazz or classical? Here is an ostensibly “normal” piano trio of classically trained musicians creating music out of the ether. As in the case of Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue or the now-famous Chick Corea-Friedrich Gulda summit meeting, nothing was discussed beforehand. It was just a case of “Do you want to start first?” “No, you go this time,” and off they fly. Does their jumping off the edge of a cliff Read more without a parachute qualify as classical improvisation or jazz? You decide.

To my ears, trained as they are as much to decipher jazz improvisations and compositions as much as classical ones—and keeping in mind the spirit of “free jazz” as exemplified by Lennie Tristano’s 1949 recording session (the first such attempt in a recording studio), Ornette Coleman’s Free Jazz for double quartet, and the 1982 piano summit between Gulda and Corea, which resulted in completely spontaneous compositions as well as one of the least-known attempts at spontaneous composition, and Leif Segerstam’s Rituals in La for two pianos—I deem this disc to be a success. Although I’m sure that the choppy rhythmic violence of the opening piece, Galapagos , will set some listeners’ teeth on edge, one has to admit that what was attempted was achieved: the “throwing out” of nothing more than a two-bar motif on the piano—in this case, a dissonant and violent one—followed by the string players commenting on it and trying to add to it in bits and pieces. The music of A Little Song , the second piece on the CD, is more lyrical, thus the musical progression that ensues is more melodic, although it emerges as modal, almost Eastern in feeling. Neither this nor other such references throughout the CD are accidental; cellist Alexander Suleiman prides himself on being a harbinger of Arabic, Eastern European, Israeli, and African music. Thus in Lullaby , one hears some of the oddest juxtapositions of themes, including one that definitely sounds like a snippet from Chopin’s “Funeral March” Sonata turned on its ear and given a minor-modal treatment, while Asian and Magyar-styled modes affect the entire piece.

Some of these pieces are quite short, being only about two minutes long ( Out of the Blue, Ghost Trio, Submarine, In the Net, Dragonfly Wings , and Exposition ) while others are five to eight minutes long ( A Little Song, Sweet Pain, Vienna ). The last two works given here, Ground Zero Epitaph and Lacrimosa , are in fact the longest on the album, clocking in at 10:07 and 17:25, respectively. But length is not an indicator of greater complexity or musical worth. All of these pieces are worth hearing because they are all interesting.

But then we ask the question, since these are spontaneously improvised works, do they bear repetitive listening? I say yes, because in this case they are pieces with several layers to them and will yield new details each time you listen—like the use of quarter-tones in Sweet Pain which somehow morph into a lyrical, café-styled melody, or the quickly-moving shards of music, juxtaposing one another before somehow magically coalescing into a set shape, in In the Net —and that is enough for me. If you’re looking for another rewrite of Paul Schoenfield’s Café Music, stay away, but if you enjoy challenging modern music, this one is for you.
