Notes and Editorial Reviews

Chevalier de Saint-Georges was born Joseph de Boulogne on the island of Guadeloupe in the West Indies. His father, comptroller and secretary to the Order de Saint-Esprit, evidently intended his son to lead the life of a Parisian gentleman and may have seen to it that the boy began violin lessons before the family moved to Paris about 1753. Although his father and African mother never married, she seemingly made the move with them. He spent his teenage years under the tutelage of a fencing master and, within a few years, was acclaimed Franceís champion. One of the first public orchestras was the Concert des Amateurs, an ensemble of more than 70 instrumentalists, active by 1769. Francois Gossec, who had been violin teacher of Saint-Georges, Read more quit his position with this orchestra in 1773 to assume another post, leaving Saint-Georges in charge of the older group. Now, he performed as soloist in concertos and symphonies concertantes ñ including his own ñ sometimes joined by Rodolph Kreutzer. The first string quartets by Saint-Georges appeared in 1773. The quartets presented on this CD, from 1777, have never been recorded before. They had been feared lost by some. Their elegant, aristocratic, and wistful moments add substantially to the growing reputation of Saint-Georges, ìle negre des lumieres.î Read less
