Notes and Editorial Reviews
The performances here, by French Canadian musicians (two of whom studied in France as well as Canada), are perfectly idiomatic and lovingly played. Given Atma’s intimate yet nicely resonant recording set down in Salle Françoys-Bernier in Quebec, this is a treat for wind fanciers, Francophiles, and just about anyone else with a taste for finely honed, small-scale chamber music with a French accent.

in the margins of the dominant style of the day, developing their own original musical language, or even going against the current. The language of these composers is alternately tonal, modal, or chromatic, but always has the charm and elegance for which French music is justly celebrated.
Particularly interested in the music of his time, clarinettist Jean-Guy Boisvert has commissioned and performed numerous Canadian works. His enthusiasm for new music has led him to expand the clarinet repertoire through commissions from Canadian composers and premieres of more than sixty works.
Christiane Laflamme received a Diplôme Supérieur de Concertiste from l’École Normale de Musique de Paris in the class of Christian Lardé, as well as a Masters in Flute Performance from the Université de Montréal and an Artist Diploma in Baroque flute from McGill University. She performs with equal pleasure on modern and baroque flutes.
Jean-Willy Kunz studied organ and harpsichord with Mireille Lagacé at the Conservatoire de Montréal and completed in 2011 his doctoral studies in organ performance at McGill University with John Grew. Mr. Jean-Willy Kunz was named the MSO’s first resident organist last March. When he takes up this post, in November 2013, his mandate will be to make known the Grand Orgue Pierre Béique at the Maison symphonique de Montréal. Read less
