Biography

Born: July 28, 1837; St. Sauveur, Hautes-Pyrenées   Died: March 20, 1913; Frederiksberg, Denmark  
Barnekow studied piano and organ in Copenhagen, attaining a high level of skill. As an independently wealthy man, he was able to devote some of his time to participating as an administrator at several Danish musical institutions. His compositions are written in a Romantic style similar to that of Hartmann and Gade. His work includes cantatas, choral and solo songs, chamber music, and piano works. He was an authority on sacred choral singing and Read more wrote many hymns for the Danish church. He also served as editor for the Danish hymnbook as well as for several works by other composers, including Buxtehude, who was relatively unknown at the time. Read less
