Notes and Editorial Reviews

This selection received a Grammy nomination for "Best Classical Crossover
Album."
As an artist, pianist Chick Corea has never had trouble reaching lofty goals. The sheer enormity of this orchestral recording, though, would be enough to scare lesser artists away. Corea succeeds in translating his craft to this setting and has produced a milestone work that is at once challenging and entertaining. The album was beautifully recorded at George Martin's Air/Lyndhurst Hall, with a massive ensemble composed of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Corea's Origin sextet. As a result, the most creative aural soundscape Corea has yet imagined has been beautifully realized.
First, the treatment of Corea's "Spain" in three movements turns the
Read more exciting rhythmic melody into a grand epic that contains elements of Rodrigo's theme, the bombast of Latin jazz, and sweeping sonic vistas supported by spicy percussion. The second, and more grandiose, piece is the stunning Concerto No. 1 for Piano and Orchestra. As would be expected, this features the piano master in his element, with plenty of room to explore his vast technique, artistic touch, and creative imagination. The orchestral accompaniment is complemented by the significant contributions of bassist Avishai Cohen and drummer Jeff Ballard. The result is a majestic piece that further illustrates Corea's value to contemporary music.
