Notes and Editorial Reviews
Fanfare, Capriccio and Rhapsody embraces an extraordinary range of musical styles from a wide variety of sources. The Medieval Suite pays homage to Léonin, Pérotin and Machaut, three master-composers from the Middle Ages, while the Sketches on a Tudor Psalm is based on the same hymn tune that Vaughan Williams used for his celebrated Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. The Capriccio thrillingly sets off a saxophone quartet against the full wind band, while the Rhapsody embroils the solo trumpet and wind band in a dazzling set of variations. The Symphony is a tightly-integrated work whose central movement is a plaintive chaconne. The album opens with a Fanfare composed for the Kennedy Centre’s 25th Anniversary season.
