Notes and Editorial Reviews

POOL is a work from 1979. At that time, John Zorn was establishing himself as a prominent player-composer in the bustling downtown New York improv scene, composing works whose raucous freedom and energy came out of free jazz and cartoon soundtracks and whose theatricality owed more to Stockhausen and the European avant-gardists of the 1960s than to any local development. The work is a 50-minute-long quilt of brief solos, duets, trios and quartets, ordered in a serialistic way, that calls upon the sonorities of the violin, percussion, electronics and several wind instruments, including a variety of game calls. The overall effect--of surprise, ambush, disruption and discontinuity in a high spirited flow of sonic events--is classic Zorn. POOL is a work from 1979.
