Charles Knox has written well over a hundred musical compositions for a variety of performing forces, from traditional genres to unusual groups such as bassoon choir and a viola and percussion duo. Knox received the B.F.A. in music from the University of Georgia where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He studied composition with Bernhard Heiden at Indiana University where he received M.Mus. and Ph.D. degrees. He is Professor Emeritus of Music at Georgia State University in Atlanta, where he was a member of the faculty for 30 years. Knox was the recipient of the 2001 Mayor's Fellowship in the Arts (Award in Music) from the City of Atlanta, Georgia (USA).
