Born: Pescara, Italy  
Carmela Remigio is an Italian lyric soprano who has developed a strong career in the opera houses of her native country. Her early vocal studies were with Aldo Protti. Her primary teacher was Leone Magiera, a noted vocal coach and operatic conductor who has worked with Luciano Pavarotti and other leading operatic stars. Remigio made her professional debut in the title role of Giampaolo Testoni's new opera Alice at the Teatro Massimo of Palermo in 1993. Since then Remigio has become especially well known for her portrayal of Mozart heroines: both Susanna and the Countess in Le nozze di Figaro, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Ilia in Idomeneo, Vitellia in La clemenza di Tito, and Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte. These include performances in the Aix-en-Provence Festival conducted by Claudio Abbado and directed by Peter Brook.

Abbado also conducted Remigio in a performance as another Alice -- Mrs. Ford in Verdi's Falstaff, and she sings the role of Desdemona in Verdi's other late Shakespearean opera, Otello.

Other of her roles include the title characters in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea, and Donizetti's Anna Bolena, Mimi in Puccini's La bohème, Liù in his Turandot, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, and Magda in La rondine. She also delves into the Baroque and bel canto repertory; representative roles include Handel's Armida and the part of Romilda in his Rinaldo, Isabella in Rossini's L'inganno felice, Imogene in Bellini's Il pirata, and Adalgisa in his Norma.

Remigio appears frequently in concert, performing such works as Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle and Stabat Mater, the Requiems of Verdi, Mozart, and Fauré, Dvorák's Te Deum and Strauss' Four Last Songs. She has appeared in Italy's leading festivals and opera houses, including the Teatro Comunale of Ferrara, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the Teatro Comunale di Modena, l'Accademia Chigiana di Siena, the Rossini Opera Festival, Milan's Teatro alla Scala, Ferrara Musica, the Settembre Musicale Modenese, and the Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome.

She has recorded for the Virgin, EMI, Deutsche Grammophon, Agora, and Ricordi labels in works of Mozart, Rossini, Paisiello, and Bellini. Read less
