Biography by William Ruhlmann
Carly Simon was one of the most popular of the confessional singer/songwriters who emerged in the early '70s. She got her start in music as part of the Simon Sisters, a duo with her sister Lucy that had a charting single in 1964. Her eponymous solo debut album appeared in 1971, and she found a Top 40 hit with the title track from her second album, Anticipation. Her third album, No Secrets, was a gold number one, and included her best-known hit "You're So Vain." During 1977-1978, two singles ("Nobody Does It Better," from the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me, and "You Belong to Me") became Top Ten hits.

Though Simon curtailed her concert appearances after collapsing of exhaustion on-stage in 1980, she scored a Top Ten U.K. hit two years later with "Why." Her U.S. career was in decline, however, as two mid-'80s albums were poor sellers. Her movie-related hits, including "Coming Around Again" (from Heartburn) and "Let the River Run" (from Working Girl), defined the mid- to late '80s. In 1990, Simon released both My Romance, her second album of pop covers, and Have You Seen Me Lately?, an album of original songs. In 1993, her "family opera" Romulus Hunt premiered and was released on record, and one year later she released a new album, Letters Never Sent.
