Notes and Editorial Reviews

ELSNER Ave Maria. Gloria et honore. 4 Corpus Christi hymns. 3 Polish Masses. Ave Maria Piotr Karpeta, cond; Cantores Minores Wratislavienses DUX 354 (79:00 Text and Translation)

This is Vol. 21 of the series “Musica Claromontana” (Jasna Góra or “hill of light”), the site of the Polish national shrine in Cz?stochowa, near Cracow, but it is devoted entirely to the works of Józef Elsner (1769–1854). Born Read more in Silesia, he conducted the theater orchestra in Lemberg (Lviv) from 1792 to 1799, then worked at the National Theater in Warsaw for the rest of his life. He composed 30 operas and other stage works in Polish, wrote symphonies, concertos, and other works, and religious compositions numbering over 100. His Passio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi (1838) is his greatest work. Teaching at the Conservatory, he is remembered as the teacher of Chopin.

The major works on this disc are three Masses to Polish texts, not unlike the German Masses of Michael Haydn and Schubert of the same era. The first one is set to a text by Feli?ski, the other two to a text by Brodzi?ski. The hymns are meant to be sung by the congregation during a Mass, but not set to the texts of the Ordinary that belong to a sung Mass. The seven hymns that complete the program are all set to familiar Latin texts. “Gloria et honore,” as well as the last of the four Eucharistic hymns, “Ecce panis angelorum,” are set for double choir, the last with instrumental accompaniment, but they are not strikingly more elaborate than the simple four-part harmonies of the other hymns. The Polish Masses are also four-voice settings with organ accompaniment. The emotional affect of the music might have been more varied.

The performances are expert. This choir has been familiar under its founder Edmund Kajdasz, but the present director has reduced the numbers to an adult chamber choir. This disc will interest specialists, for the composer seems to have been totally neglected on discs before this appeared.
