"As a life-long singer (from the back row) it was exciting to find such a treasure of choral music. Many of the pieces in the collection are familiar and I have sung them. But many of the pieces I do not know. I am learning. I recommend this set for anyone who appreciates and enjoys choral music."

"There's very little to carp at in this set, and a great deal for which to be grateful. To begin with the carping; out of 50 cds only half of one is devoted to music written before 1520; and strangely enough there is no Gregorian chant, which seems a major omission for a set that calls itself in French Musique Sacrée - a definition that seems stretched to its limit by Mahler's 8th Symphony, and well beyond its limit by Carl Orff's Carmina Burana.
But there are so many marvelous performances here that it's hard to know where to begin. There is a great deal of superlatively good John Eliot Gardiner (most but not all of the Bach, the Monteverdi Vespers, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis in an absolutely stunning recording, the Brahms Requiem); the Messiah is the 1979 Christopher Hogwood recording with Emma Kirkby in radiant form (has But who May abide the Day of His Coming ever sounded more thrilling?); the Dream of Gerontius is the Benjamin Britten performance, which is my own favorite on record, and Britten is also present conducting his own War Requiem. The renaissance music (Palestrina, Tallis, Byrd) receives glowing beautiful performances (though I confess to preferring David Hill's recording of the Victoria Requiem Mass to the one included, fine as the latter is). But almost every performance in this set is fabulously satisfying, and at this price it seems the bargain of a lifetime."
