Notes and Editorial Reviews

This CD contains vintage Shostakovich in his most humorous vein. Portions of these film scores have been available through the years, but they have not been around for years. On this new Boheme CD, we have the complete scores, not selections, in excellent sound. The works were recorded in 1981 and 1982. Shostakovich threw himself with abandon into composing music for films. He wrote film music at the beginning of his career, when he was dealing with black and white silent movies, in the middle and at the end right up until 1970. He provided the music for a large number of Soviet films, some great and some not so great. In this medium, he wrote more than any of his contemporaries, although Khachaturian gave him a strong run for his money. Read more The fact that the film medium appealed strongly to Stalin and many others in the Soviet leadership no doubt helped the composer and the propagation of his music. For example, in the 1930s alone, Shostakovich wrote sixteen film scores. This was the time when cartoons and animation were blossoming. Both the scores on this CD come from this period; The Tale of a Priest from 1933/34 and The Silly Little Mouse from 1939. Read less
