Notes and Editorial Reviews

Schubert is credited with having embarked on some fifteen symphonies but only nine of them were finished. The Ninth Symphony, known as 'the great C major' is thought to have been sketched in 1825, but its genesis has always been somewhat confused by the fact that the final manuscript bears the date 'March 1828'. Hence commentators have often concluded that the work dates from Schubert's final months, especially as its numbering in the composer's symphonic corpus has frequently been changed. However, it does now seem clear that this immense symphony was written in several stages, starting in the summer of 1825.
