Superb 19th Century Romanticism, Cheap April 10, 2012

"Pavarotti consistently dominates, of course. But the supporting casts are fine, handsome columns holding up a gleaming roof. And the operatic composers, several of whom don't show themselves very often on American opera stages, are worth every bit of these splendiferous recordings. I have only very recently received this huge collection, and so far heard only the two operas discussed below. (Opera tastes better as slowly downed wine, rather than as gulped cold water.) Massent's MANON, performed in Italian, seems even more potent than in its native French. French is a lovely spoken tongue, but Italian-- especially in the throats of these mostly Italian-born voices -- seems more appropriate for a highly Italianate score. The taut orchestral control in Bellini's fast-moving version of what is usually known, here, as ROMEO AND JULIET keeps the rapid pace vividly alive. Again, the "supporting" voices know how to dig in and project out an opera no longer heard very often. And Pavorotti very much in his prime is brilliantly commanding. Singing as a soloist, as half of a duet, or darting in and out with half a dozen other voices, he is consistently dramatic and never too proud to leave his part only one share of a magnificent whole. A bracing bargain!"
