Notes and Editorial Reviews

None of the music on this disc is “authentic,” that is, played from original sources. The Bach concertos have come down to us as keyboard concertos, which are presumed to be Bach’s own reconfigurations of earlier concertos now lost. Thus, the reconstructions hypothetically bring us closer to Bach’s original intentions than extant scores. They have been around long enough to have entered the mainstream, and at least two of them, the double concerto BWV 1060 and the incomplete concerto BWV 1059, are probably heard more often in their reconstructed form than in the “authentic” versions. All have been recorded Read more with great success a number of times, but to have all four on a single disc is a rare treat, especially in performances that are as fine as those on the present release. Marcel Ponseele, one of the premier Baroque oboists currently before the public, is in top form, and these performances, made in conjunction with his excellent chamber ensemble, Il Gardellino, are a constant joy.

As on his splendid recent recording of Baroque concertos ( Fanfare 28:1) Ponseele has appended an unrelated encore. In this instance, it is one of Mahler’s Rückert Lieder , arranged by Ponseele for oboe da caccia, strings, and harpsichord. It seemed irrelevant to me, but listeners should feel free to decide that for themselves. In any case, this disc is a worthy successor to the earlier release, and merits a wholehearted recommendation.
