Notes and Editorial Reviews

Bette Davis was making a triumphant return to Broadway in the 1952 revue Two’s Company … until the show began its previews, when she promptly collapsed onstage on opening night. Davis was perhaps in over her head (song, dance and comedy were not her strong points) in this otherwise charming revue, with a score largely by Vernon Duke (music) and Sammy Cahn and Ogden Nash (lyrics). Two’s Company was one of the last of the sophisticated, satirical revues, a kind of show that television killed off, and its reputation has been held hostage to Davis’s troubled involvement. But Sheldon Harnick, Horton Foote and Peter DeVries were among those contributing material to the show, and the choreographer was no less than Jerome Robbins. Hiram Sherman won Read more a Tony for his expert comedy work in this fascinating relic of Broadway’s past.

A Forgotten Gem October 13, 2018 By J. Kramar (Winterville, NC) See All My Reviews "I have adored this recording for nearly 40 years. It is terrific that the general public once again has access to it thanks to Arkivmusic. A previous review was very negative about Miss Davis's contributions. While she is not a traditionally impressive musical theater singer, her innate talent shines through at all moments. Only a true star could pull off a musical review with such limited intrinsic vocal talent. Her supporting cast members are excellent -- notably Ellen Hanley, who turns in consistently beautiful and original performances. ("Haunted Hot Spot", and "Roundabout" are wonderful.) I dare any real fan of the American Musical Theater to not be impressed by Miss Davis's rendition of "Just like a man!"" Report Abuse
Disaster! July 21, 2015 By Robert Elden (New York, NY) See All My Reviews "Save your hard earned money. This has to be the prime example of the proverbial Broadway Bomb. Music trite; lyrics banal; and most importantly, the entire production sounds downright dull! Which brings me to Miss Davis. The idea the show's producers must have had about foisting her off on the ticket buying public as a viable musical comedy performer was, and is, ludicrous at best and fraudulent at worst. She is pathetic to say the least. What a waste of an important and acclaimed Academy Award winning actresses talents. The entire enterprise is a total embarrassment." Report Abuse
