Notes and Editorial Reviews

Manfred Schubert was born in Berlin-Charlottenburg. He studied musical education and Slavonic Studies at Berlin Humboldt University and took further studies with Rudolf Wagner-Regeny at the German Academy of Arts. He was a music critic for the "Berliner Zeitung" and often conducted his own works with the Berliner Staatskapelle in Lyon. He was a part-time lecturer in composition at the Berlin "Hanns Eisler" musical college, but really for most of his life he has worked as a free lance composer in Berlin. All three works presented on this CD are to a certain degree peculiar to that characteristic phenomenon that is as old as is the art of composition itself; they are music about music. Born out of the confrontation of different styles and Read more epochs, music about music documents the creative reflection of the art of composing about itself, the composer's act of listening to something that was thoroughly conceived in the past and reflecting it from a contemporary point of view. What may inspire music about music? It is the joy of re-arranging older works of the past, which we may feel are not perfect in the ultimate sense, or it is the challenge to strive for perfection, as in Nachtgesange. It is the thrill of playing with dance-like, rhythmic figures, historical style patterns or melodic intonation models, as in Tanzstudien. Or it is the sense of responsibility towards the past that makes a composer revive traditional genres such as with the First Symphony. What better composer than to deal with music about music than a composer with the name Manfred Schubert; a composer whose very name implies the burden of tradition? Read less
