Biography by Uncle Dave Lewis
English pianist Benjamin Frith studied with pianist Fanny Waterman. At age 14, Frith won the U.K. Dudley National Piano Competition, and at 20 he was asked by Peter Pears to play at the Aldeburgh Festival. Frith tied for first place in the 1986 Concorso Busoni and took top honors in the 1989 Artur Rubinstein Piano Competition. In 1992 he made a big impression at the Edinburgh Festival with Beethoven's Diabelli Variations; this led to his first recording, made for ASV.

Frith tours all over the world and is frequently heard at festivals and on the competition circuit, though these days usually not as an entrant. Frith is renowned for his depth and sensitivity, not a hallmark one usually associates with pianists who win at the competitive level. Where Frith's work has had the most extensive reach and visibility, however, is in the recording studio. Although he has recorded one-off projects for Black Box Classics, Koch, and the defunct Unicorn Kanchana label, the overwhelming majority of Frith's work has been for the Naxos label. For Naxos he has recorded the music of Bax, Schumann, the complete piano concertos of John Field, and the complete piano music of Felix Mendelssohn. Frith is also greatly interested in chamber music with piano, and in 1998 he joined the Gould Piano Trio as its resident pianist.
