Notes and Editorial Reviews

Two apparently irreconcilable musical traditions meet here. This is the miracle in sound accomplished by Jean-Christophe Frisch and François Picard, which allows us to hear something that seemed unimaginable: that Chinese and European artists could succeed in blending their voices and instruments in an exultant Office of Vespers such as only the Jesuits could conceive. Everything is a new discovery in this latest episode in the 'Pathways of Baroque', which provides a marvellous illustration of the encounter between East and West; not as the imposition of one culture on another, but as a dialogue between equals.
