The advent of digital sampling technology opened new doors for composers such as Jay Cloidt. The speed and simplicity of the samplers were worlds ahead of crude tape loops, allowing composers to seamlessly blend synthesized creations with living performers. This collection of Cloidt compositions provides an excellent view of how this new technology transformed contemporary art music.
Two versions of the title track 'Kole Kat Krush' highlight the genre's potential. Track one, performed by the Kronos Quartet, features tape samples and digital processing alongside the very organic string sound. Other pieces such as 'Karoshi' lean even more heavily on the digital. String bass and digital percussion, including sampled car crashes and other noises, give the piece a cartoon feel. Themes familiar from other more traditional music weave their way into 'Karoshi,' the influence of famed cartoon soundtrack composer Carl Stalling.
