Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Barcelona Guitar Quartet presents in this CD an original proposal that, perhaps, could only have come from their hands. This is due to the rigorous musical approach, the sensuality of sound and, especially, their admiration and knowledge of the music of the Catalan Xavier Montsalvatge and the Cuban Leo Brouwer. From Barcelona to Havana is an imaginary - or real?- round trip which oozes ethnic mixing and in which that sentence by Salvador Dali becomes true: "We must move from that which is `ultralocal' to that which is universal." Montsalvatge, no doubt one of the most representative and important composers of Spanish music of the 20th century, avoided, even in his creative youth, the genuine nationalism then in use in Spanish music and Read more created a new "imaginary folklore," known by the name Antillanismo (peculiar to the Antilles), incorporating into his personal language the scents and accents of Caribbean music, and most especially, the rhythm of the habanera, which - also on a round trip - left Spain, settled in Cuba and came back. And it is from the other side of the ocean that Leo Brouwer, genetically assimilating the music of Spanish origin rooted in his country, Cuba, seems to give back to Montsalvatge, and with him to all of us, that musical offering by the composer from Girona; and he does it with music of moderated modernity and higher abstraction. The music of Montsalvatge and Brouwer is a good example of the fact that that which is serious does not have to be tedious. Read less
