 Sampler from the Past September 4, 2016 By W. Murphy (Sacramento, CA) See All My Reviews "This is the Starkland label's 1993 sampler disc of several electronic music composers who had individual albums coming out (or already in the catalog, like Tod Dockstader's pioneering work from the early 1960s). They mostly fit into the early electronic period, when musicians were experimenting with the sounds available from their synthesizers rather than writing conventional songs but for unconventional instruments, like today's electronic pop and dance music. The results range from jaunty rhythmic pulsations to long, pure tone patterns. Some resemble the eerie soundtracks of old scifi movies. The exception here is Phillip Bimstein's "Garland Hirschi's Cows" from 1990, a whimsical stitched-together fabric of farmer Hirschi's fond ruminations about his cows. This piece owes a lot to Steve Reich's earlier assemblages of phrases and sentences, but Bimstein is less serious and more fun." Report Abuse
